Book Study
In this unit of study students read the book, Maniac Magee! We began the unit targeting our focus skills, and setting a purpose for our reading, we continued this practice everyday. Students participated in Concentric Circles, small group discussions, one-on-one instruction and project based learning. Students kept a reading journal in which they recorded; answers to comprehension questions, chapter notes, unfamiliar words, thoughts, questions and wonders to be brought up in circle or group.
At the end of the unit students created a game based on their learning. Students played each others games to test their knowledge! Pine Valley Elementary and the Adventures of Mrs. Wulf- A Flat Teacher StoryThe Daily 5The Daily 5 fosters independence in all learners. The Daily 5 consists of five literacy centers: Read to Self, Listening to Reading, Read to a Partner, Word Work and Writing. The program allows students to make their own choices regarding which literacy centers they want to do and when. To assist students I created a Daily 5 Menu to ensure students are on task. It also teaches students to monitor their own literacy learning. Typically, while the students are completing their Daily 5 centers, I run guided reading groups and work with students one-on-one. The program is motivating and engaging, and can be adapted to fit the diverse literacy needs of all students.

Distance Learning: Flat Teacher Read AloudI created this story and video for my students to work on their literacy and writing. Students were provided a paper copy of our story and a "flat teacher". During a Zoom Video conference with my students I taught them how to photo journal and provide a sentence. They were also expected to utilize CUPS while writing their sentences, a skill we had been working on in class. The video copy was also sent to each student to view as a model of fluent reading. The students were asked to journal their time and learning out of the classroom. Each student sent in photos of their daily activities and learning experiences! I then used the photos and writing from the different activities that each student had sent in to develop and create a continuation of the story "Pine Valley Elementary and the Adventures of Mrs. Wulf.
Daily 5 Student Tracking MenuMenu's varied based on student reading levels.
